The Habit Stack That Changed My Morning
Habit stacking is one of the most researched, most effective strategies in behavioral science. The concept is simple: attach a new habit to an existing one. But building a morning stack that actually holds takes some design.
What Is Habit Stacking?
Popularized by James Clear in Atomic Habits and rooted in decades of behavioral research, habit stacking works because your existing habits are already encoded as strong neural pathways. When you attach a new behavior to one of those pathways, you borrow its momentum.
The formula: After I [CURRENT HABIT], I will [NEW HABIT].
Building Your Morning Stack
Start with your most automatic morning action. For most people, that is making coffee or brushing their teeth. From there, layer intentionally:
- After I start the coffee, I will write three things I am grateful for.
- After I finish breakfast, I will open my wellness planner and set my intention for the day.
- After I set my intention, I will spend five minutes with the Mindful Morning Journal.
Three linked habits. Twenty minutes total. The difference in how your day unfolds is not small.
The Key: Design for Friction
The habit stack fails when you have to think about it. Keep your digital planner pinned in your browser, your journal linked from your phone's home screen. Remove every friction point and the stack becomes automatic within two weeks.
